The island of Taiwan lies off
the southeast coast of mainland China and was the refuge for the forces of
nationalist of Chiang Kai-Shek after their defeat by Mao’s Communists.

With their retreat from mainland
China the treasures of Chinese culture were taken and are now housed in a truly
amazing museum outside the capital of Taipei. A recommended destination for
tourist and business travellers alike.

Formerly known as Formosa - the
water lying between the island and the mainland are called the Formosa Straits -
it was first occupied by the Chinese until the 17th Century when the Dutch and
Spanish occupied the island for nearly half a century. The Japanese ruled the
island until following the defeat of the Japanese after World War 2.

For the tourist, Taiwan offers a
wide variety of experiences from scenic vistas to sunny beaches, although the
capital is somewhat crowded.
