Lying to the of the North China Plain, Hebei Province has an area of 187,700 square
kilometres and a population exceeding 63-million. Shijiazhuang is the provincial capital, a major
railway hub and growing centre located about 270 kilometres south of Beijing.
On Hebei's long coastline are many ports, the most important one being Qinhuangdao, the
world's largest coal terminal, from which 61-million tons of the fossil fuel were shipped to the southern part of China
and to many other countries. The bulk of the coal was carried directly to Qinhuangdao Harbour by a double-track,
electrified railroad from Shanxi Province. Eastern Hebei
Province is a flat, alluvial plain on which grow luxuriant crops of corn, cotton, peanut, rice, sesame, tobacco and
wheat. In the western region of Hebei is the rugged Taihang Mountain Area which, besides producing wheat and other
cereal crops, also grows a wide variety of fruits, date, persimmon and walnut.

In north-eastern Hebei Province just northeast of the great port of Tianjin is the Kailuan
Coal Mines, one of the major coal producers in China. Sizable reserves of oil, iron and other deposits
have also been found in the province. Petroleum are tapped on quite a scale in the Renqiu Area in southeastern Hebei
